Simplify Spring Learning

Spring homeschooling can be a wonderful time to incorporate outdoor activities, explore nature, and engage in hands-on learning experiences.

If it feels like the last few months of school are dragging on, sickness has derailed homeschooling or you just need a change of pace, these tips can help:

  1. Do fewer problems. If you want to finish the math book, but realize your students are over it, try just doing odds or evens, or skipping pages of problems they already have mastered. The same strategy can be applied to any text that is starting to get tedious.

  2. Start a new read aloud. Some favorite read alouds for spring are Winnie the Pooh, By the Shores of Silver Lake, Charlotte's Web, and Treasures in the Snow.

  3. Learn a new handcraft. You can watch watercolor painting with Jay Lee on Youtube, try dying fabrics with natural dyes, or learn to knit while listening to a read aloud on Audible.

  4. Start a garden. Gardening is a great life science lesson, and you could add some language arts work by having your child document what they plant and when it comes up.

  5. Make a spring themed menu. Have a festive Saint Patrick's Day meal, try baking hot cross buns, or make Birds Nest Treats to celebrate spring birds.
